How to Calculate AC Tonnage for Your Room

Choosing the right AC tonnage is crucial for optimal cooling, energy efficiency, and electricity bills. An undersized AC will struggle to cool your room, while an oversized AC will cycle on and off frequently, wasting electricity and causing uneven cooling.

Understanding AC Tonnage

AC tonnage refers to the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. One ton equals 12,000 BTU (British Thermal Units) per hour. In India, residential ACs typically range from 0.75 ton to 2 tons.

Factors That Affect AC Tonnage Requirements

1. Room Size (Most Important)

The primary factor is your room's area (length × width). As a rule of thumb, you need roughly 20 BTU per square foot as a baseline — but India spans several climate zones, and the right figure depends on where you live. Use the zone guide below to pick your BTU per square foot before doing anything else.

BTU per Square Foot by Indian Climate Zone:

  • Hot & Dry — 25-30 BTU/sq ft: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi NCR, Haryana, Punjab, western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha. Summer peaks of 43-48°C mean the AC fights a huge outdoor-indoor temperature gap. Size at the upper end (28-30) if the room faces west or sits under the roof.
  • Hot & Humid (Coastal) — 24-28 BTU/sq ft: Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Goa, Visakhapatnam, coastal Odisha and Kerala. Peak temperatures are lower than the dry zone, but 70-85% humidity means a large share of the capacity goes into removing moisture rather than dropping temperature. Do not undersize here — an undersized unit leaves the room cold and clammy.
  • Composite — 24-28 BTU/sq ft: Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Bhopal, Nagpur, Varanasi, Raipur, Ranchi and most of the Indo-Gangetic plain. These cities get a dry-hot April-June followed by a humid monsoon, so size for the harder of the two seasons.
  • Moderate / Temperate — 18-22 BTU/sq ft: Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad's cooler months, Mysuru, Shillong, Dehradun, Shimla and other hill and plateau regions. Shorter, milder summers mean a smaller unit is usually enough — oversizing here is the most common and most expensive mistake.

Multiply your room area by the BTU figure for your zone, then divide by 12,000 to get tonnage. Example: a 150 sq ft room in Jaipur (hot & dry, 28 BTU) = 4,200 BTU from area alone, before occupants and heat load — which pushes it firmly into 1.5 ton territory. The same room in Bengaluru (20 BTU) = 3,000 BTU and comfortably fits a 1 ton unit.

2. Number of Occupants

Each person in the room generates approximately 600 BTU of heat. A bedroom for 2 people needs more cooling capacity than a single-person room of the same size.

3. Sun Exposure & Window Direction

Anywhere in India, west and south-west facing rooms take the brunt of the afternoon sun — the hottest part of the day — and can need 30-40% more cooling capacity. South-facing rooms are next. North and east-facing rooms get morning sun only and need the least. Large glass windows without shading, curtains or reflective film push the requirement up further; a shaded or balcony-covered wall pulls it down.

4. Floor Level

Top floor: Needs 20-25% extra capacity everywhere in India — an uninsulated concrete terrace radiates heat downward for hours after sunset
Middle floors: Standard calculation applies
Ground floor: Needs 5-10% extra capacity, more if the floor is directly over a parking area or shop

5. Ceiling Height

Standard calculations assume 8-10 feet ceiling height. For higher ceilings (11-12 feet), add 15-20% more capacity as there's more air volume to cool.

6. Appliances & Heat-Generating Equipment

Kitchen: Add 4,000 BTU for stove and appliances
Living room: Add 1,000-1,500 BTU for TV, computer, etc.
Bedroom: Add 500-1,000 BTU for basic electronics

Basic Formula:
BTU Required = (Room Area in sq ft × Zone BTU) + (Number of people × 600) + Heat Load Adjustments

Zone BTU: 25-30 hot & dry · 24-28 hot & humid · 24-28 composite · 18-22 moderate

Tonnage: BTU ÷ 12,000 = AC Tonnage

Round up to the nearest standard size (0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 ton) — but only just. If your calculation lands at 1.1 ton, a 1.5 ton unit is the right call; if it lands at 1.6 ton, do not jump to 2.5 ton.
